Abstract
Since the first of many elastic dikes was discovered near Rockwall, Texas, in 1851, their origin has been a subject of much controversy. Various observers have attributed them to the work of ancient man, igneous activity, marine sedimentation, and upward injection from parent layers of sandstone.
