Abstract
Eccedentesia is a composition for wind ensemble (consisting of 1 piccolo, 1 flute, 1 alto flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B-flat, 1 bass clarinet in B-flat, 2 bassoons, 3 trumpets in B-flat, 4 French horns, 2 trombones, 1 bass trombone, 1 euphonium, 1 tuba, 1 contrabass, 1 celeste, and 4 percussionists playing the marimba, snare drum, bass drum, tam-tam, chorales, and glasses of water tuned to A5 and D6) in one movement with a duration of 12 minutes. This thesis seeks to represent the struggles of suppressing internalized pain behind a joyful, but superficial, exterior through musical means. I accomplish this by utilizing musical techniques such as bitonality and polyrhythms to represent these opposing aspects.
