Abstract
This thesis seeks to capture characteristics of outer space, such as the twinkling stars, colorful nebulas, a black hole, and the creation of something new, through music. To accomplish this goal, I have utilized both acoustic and electroacoustic sounds to broaden the timbral scope of the piece. The instrumentation includes a reduced chamber orchestra, three soloists, and computer. The featured soloists are Bassoon, Percussion, specifically Crotales, Suspended Cymbal, and Vibraphone, and solo Violin. The subject of outer space has to do with my curiosity and fascination with the universe and the things within it. My depiction of space takes many artistic liberties. Using the lens of my knowledge and understanding of the universe as well as my faith and how the creation of the world came to be both influenced my interpretation of this theme and informed the techniques used in this thesis.
