Abstract
'Lifted' is a play inspired by and written during my time in Addis Abeba, Ethiopa, where I worked with children at the Artists for Charity Institute for a month in July-August of 2013. Rather than focus on my experiences in a linear narrative, I wrote something like a poem in theatrical structure; a direct response to the internal churning about of my soul and thinking that occurred because of the culture shock, the love I was introduced to and the beautiful people I met during my stay. The notion of family was redefined for me and I came out of the experience with a new goal as an artist: to create art that inspires, to create art for social awareness. I wrote everyday for an hour and finished the play two days before heading back to America. 'Lifted' was produced in a workshop production, directed by Joshua Kumler at SMU Meadows 'b450.'
